Prospective Students:    The animal science major offers you the opportunity to apply all of the core sciences to the study of animal genetics, nutrition, physiology, growth, and management. Although not a part of the the School of Veterinary Medicine, the animal science program is considered one of the premiere pre-veterinary degree programs.

The Department of Animal Science has recently welcomed a new faculty member, Dr. Julio Giordano, Assistant Professor, to the Dairy Management team. Giordano specializes in dairy cattle reproductive physiology and management.

Growing up in Balnearia, Argentina as the son of a farm animal veterinarian and the grandson of two dairy farmers, Giordano says his passion and interest for dairy cows arose early in life.

"Since I can remember, I've always been around cows," said Giordano. "Both of my grandparents had dairies in the past and the area I lived was all about dairy." Giordano first studied veterinary medicine, earning his DVM from the Catholic University of Cordoba in Argentina. Upon earning his DVM, a desire to specialize in dairy reproduction led Giordano to pursue a Master of Science. He left Argentina to study at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, where he researched strategies to alter ovulatory follicle size and reduce the time to ovulation in lactating dairy cows. Giordano then worked on the development and on-farm implementation of synchronization of ovulation programs aimed to improve reproductive efficiency of lactating dairy cows as well as..."Read more...

Held on Saturday, May 4th, the 23rd annual educational spring outreach event, affectionately known as "Animal Crackers" hosted by the Department of Animal Science, exceeded capacity in Morrison Hall with over 300 participants travelling from 33 different counties in New York State. Galton Retirement Nearly 250 people gathered in Liverpool, NY in March at a special celebration event held in honor of Dr. David Galton's May 2013 retirement, his vision and success with the Dairy Fellows program, and in recognition of all of the generous donors who have given to the new Dairy Fellows Program Excellence Endowment. Dairy Quiz Bowl -Led by Debbie Grusenmeyer (Extension Associate/ PRO-DAIRY Youth Specialist) and Matt Young (Cornell Animal Science '02) a team of New York 4-H youth recently won the National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Championship title for the 10th time. See complete article.
